Julie’s shift happened when she was going to hold a gathering for a public event in her home, with her violent ex-husband present around her. Suddenly, while preparing everything, a few minutes before the guests were arriving, the thought popped into her head: Who am I going to be when they get here? Because I knew that if I was who they knew me as, then there would be hell to pay afterward. And if I would be who he wanted me to be, then they wouldn’t respect me anymore.” This is when she decided that enough was enough and started reaching out for help and breaking her silence around the abuse she was suffering.
